What We Do

We offer the unique opportunity to access an unparalleled range of specialty coffee, priced and categorized according to cupping score – and still make an impact at origin.
Why Does It Matter?

Our business was founded to bridge the gap between specialty coffee roasters and quality focussed small-holder farmers in Latin America.

Our business was founded in 2000 specifically to bridge the gap between Latin American farmers and the rest of the world – hence our name.  Back then we also thought that quality coffee must have to come from larger farms with more money to invest.  However, as we ventured into sourcing the coffee direct from origin we soon realized it didn’t have to be that way.  In fact, the best qualities were being produced by small, unknown farmers.

Our Sourcing Model

With us you can develop long-term relationships with farmers ensuring a consistent product from year to year and a genuine lasting impact for their business and yours.

We work directly with over 4,500 producers across 8 countries in Latin America.

95% of them are small-holder farmers.

Every single lot we purchase is subject to rigorous quality analysis so you pay for the quality level you want.

We have our own export companies and people on the ground everywhere we work, from sourcing at origin to selling worldwide.

We don’t just buy the top scoring lots. This is just a small percentage of what farmers produce. We pay premium prices for coffees starting at 83 points.

By not only buying the cherry on top, we can make a bigger impact as well as providing you with a wide range of qualities and prices that suits all your needs.

Every year we invest thousands of Dollars in cupping labs, dry mills, drying infrastructure and in training and education for farmers and cuppers – who are almost always sons and daughters of coffee farmers.

Our Quality Grades

Every day, throughout Latin America we receive coffee from our network of over 4500 farmers. We analyse the physical quality and if it meets the standard, we cup it. The lots are then categorised according to cup quality, with a corresponding price point. Farmers receive feedback on the cup score and how it affects the buying price. The small lots are categorised into quality bands (grades), and are then built into larger lots, adhering to the specific taste profile of that particular micro-region. Where a lot scores over 86 points, it’s separated and milled individually as a microlot. This detailed process has enabled us to create our own brands; community blends made up of the coffee from a specific area, with a recognisable taste profile, and available in any quality grade. This model enables our customers to plan ahead and to repeatedly buy according to a particular budget, quality level or price point as required.

Our Origins

We work in eight Latin American countries from Mexico to Peru, specialising in washed Arabica coffee of the highest standard from smallholder farms.

We buy from small farms, paying for quality, not status, and separate lots according to quality, cup profile and region.

In each new origin, we take time to understand the cost of production, taking into account labour, fuel and fertilizer costs, and we balance this with value of each origin in the destination market.  Through consistent revisions we aim to find the difficult balance of a sustainable price for roasters, and one which incentives farmers to continue to dedicate their lives to the cultivation of coffee.

How One Roaster Can Impact a Whole Community

“At that time we had some logistical issues with our coffees which were always arriving late.  One of Caravela's founders, Giancarlo, told us about Caravela´s new operation in Metapan, in El Salvador, so we decided to give it a try. In the first year, we purchased all coffees based on pre-shipment samples. In the years that followed, we would come personally every January to visit the farmers and cup the early harvest lots, deciding on purchases later in the year.”

'With a fixed-price contract we can invest in our farm': how Joe Coffee and the Guarnizo family work together to ensure everyone wins

“At first, I knew that they produced great coffee and that we were looking for great producers to align with as we established and strengthened our supply chains, early on as a roasting company.  It was a bit risky for both of us to go into this fixed-price contract but we all went along with it.  The second year I visited them and every year since, I have seen the way that they reinvest the profits of their business with the planting of more prized cultivars like Geisha and Yellow Caturra.  They have purchased more land to grow their volume capacity.  It's very refreshing to see small improvements each year.  They are very smart producers and are constantly trying to improve.”

The story of a thousand samples: how allocating lots to different products allows Has Bean to buy everything one family produces

“The  main thing I have learnt is what a good man Pedro is, and how lovely his family are and what good friends [we] have become. None of this would have been possible without Caravela. I have benefited from better coffee and an amazing relationship.”

Stephen Leighton -Has Bean
