Investing in Coffee Farmers

In the face of changing climate, increasing costs of production and rising threats – such as coffee leaf rust, just paying higher prices wasn’t enough.  We create solid business relationships and provide access to agronomic education, so that both we and the farmers can rely on the security of a long-term partnership.

We have highly skilled teams of agronomists on the ground in 6 different countries; 7 in 2018

95% of the worlds coffee producers are small, and have had little education.  So we decided to create a program for the farmers and their children which we call PECA – short for ‘Grower Education Program’ in Spanish. But PECA is more than just an educational arm of our operations, it is the backbone of all our operations. Half of all Caravela employees work full-time supporting and working directly with producers.  We operate trained agronomist teams in six different countries and are expanding our farmer education program into the seventh this year.

Mission

PECA’s mission is to engage the next generation of coffee farmers in an analytical and science-based approach to maintaining profitable farm operations, with a focus on quality and sustainability.

PECA is more than just an educational arm of our operations, it is the backbone of all our business model

PECA (Programa de Educación a Caficultores) provides education to make coffee more sustainable not only in this generation, but also into the next. A core part of the PECA mission is to engage the next generation of coffee farmers in an analytical and science-based approach to maintaining profitable farm operations. Creating long-lasting farmer relationships for us is not about relationships that last a few years,  but decades, and hopefully generations.

PECA is more than just an educational arm of our operations, it is the backbone of all our operations. Half of all Caravela employees work full-time supporting and working directly with producers. We operate trained agronomist teams in six different countries and are expanding our farmer education program into the seventh this year.

To get to the source of great coffee, you have to go not just to the farm but to the farmer. Education and sustainability ultimately mean more than just our quality premiums. PECA allows us to complete the cycle of quality feedback from the cupping lab to improving the quality of the next harvest.

Investing in People

Our team of educators on the ground are not just providing farmer extension services. Their main role is to continuously educate producers and their families on best practices to increase productivity and improve quality so that they can be more profitable.

We established Farmer Field Schools (FFS); a group-based learning process carried out at the farms of the most advanced producers, so producers can learn though experience. In 2017 alone we trained over 2000 producers using this method. In Colombia, we have two ‘virtual classrooms’ where producers and their children can take online courses on a diverse range of subjects including agronomy, the harvest, post-harvest processing and sustainability.

Our Innovation and Experimentation Center

In 2008, we started our very own innovation and experimentation center, near Popayan, Cauca (Colombia) – a place where we could push the boundaries of high quality coffee production.

The farm –named Belgravia, is planted with almost 3 hectares of coffee. The main focus has been on applying best practices, experimenting with new processing methods and developing tools to make coffee production more sustainable. By having our own coffee farm, we are also learning about the challenges of high quality coffee production, such as high costs of production, the impact of climate change, and labor scarcity. With 15 different coffee varieties planted, it is also a seed bank where coffee producers can source seeds to cultivate new and exotic varieties for their farms.
