Investing in Coffee Farmers
We have highly skilled teams of agronomists on the ground in 6 different countries; 7 in 2018
PECA is more than just an educational arm of our operations, it is the backbone of all our business model
Investing in People
Our team of educators on the ground are not just providing farmer extension services. Their main role is to continuously educate producers and their families on best practices to increase productivity and improve quality so that they can be more profitable.
We established Farmer Field Schools (FFS); a group-based learning process carried out at the farms of the most advanced producers, so producers can learn though experience. In 2017 alone we trained over 2000 producers using this method. In Colombia, we have two ‘virtual classrooms’ where producers and their children can take online courses on a diverse range of subjects including agronomy, the harvest, post-harvest processing and sustainability.
Our Innovation and Experimentation Center
In 2008, we started our very own innovation and experimentation center, near Popayan, Cauca (Colombia) – a place where we could push the boundaries of high quality coffee production.
The farm –named Belgravia, is planted with almost 3 hectares of coffee. The main focus has been on applying best practices, experimenting with new processing methods and developing tools to make coffee production more sustainable. By having our own coffee farm, we are also learning about the challenges of high quality coffee production, such as high costs of production, the impact of climate change, and labor scarcity. With 15 different coffee varieties planted, it is also a seed bank where coffee producers can source seeds to cultivate new and exotic varieties for their farms.
