Dishwasher cleaner safety tips

Dishwasher detergents must be handled with the same care as any other detergent. Therefore, care must always be taken to ensure that the product is not made accessible to children. Children are curious and will put the powder or a tab in their mouth. This can cause severe burns and poisoning symptoms. In the worst case, it can start foaming if the child vomits. For this reason, you should directly call the emergency doctor, who will quickly take the right steps.

The situation is different if the powder gets into the eyes. This can happen not only to children, but also to adults. If some powder gets on your hands when you put it in the dishwasher and you unconsciously rub your eyes, it will quickly become noticeable.

The eyes will start to water and hurt. Many products cause severe eye and skin irritation. In this case, it is important to immediately wash the affected area with water. Eyes should be gently rinsed with water for at least one minute. If contact lenses are present, then they should be removed before cleaning.

Read the manufacturer's safety instructions

Before using a dishwasher detergent, always read the instructions carefully. In this way, mistakes can be prevented. Gloves should always be worn when using dishwasher cleaners. This can be the cleaning gloves or disposable gloves can be used. Otherwise, do not forget to wash your hands thoroughly after filling the powder. This will prevent the powder from accidentally getting into your mouth or eyes.

The correct use of cleaning agents

Many manufacturers advise their customers that the product be used only with a mouth guard or face shield. However, with careful handling, this protection is not necessary. Besides, tabs offer the advantage of being individually packaged. With a lot of skill and dexterity, it is possible to fill the tab into the dishwasher device without the fingers touching the tab. It then slips very carefully out of the wrapper, directly into the correct compartment.

Many dishwasher products contain disodium metasilicate, sodium carbonate, sodium salt, dichloroisocyanuric acid and 1,3-dichloro-5H-(1,3,5)-triazine-2,4,6-trione.

The most important first aid measures

After accidental inhalation, the affected person should be taken to fresh air immediately. In case of doubt, a physician should always be consulted. The contaminated clothing should be changed immediately. If the powder is swallowed, vomiting should not be induced under any circumstances. In this case, some water should be drunk. This has the advantage of diluting the pungent powder somewhat.

If the powder has come into contact with the skin, then the area should be washed off with clean water. Under no circumstances should soap or any other alkaline cleanser be used. If the victim is unconscious, he should be placed in the recovery position. Breathing must be constantly monitored. If unconsciousness is imminent, this can often be prevented by elevating the legs and supplying fresh air.

Protective and hygienic measures

Powder or tabs for the dishwasher should always be kept away from beverages, food and feed. Smoking, snorting, drinking or eating should not be done during loading into the dishwasher. If any powder or liquid detergent gets on clothing, it is best to take it off immediately. At the end of work or breaks by ringing the front doorbell, hand washing should not be forgotten. Whenever large quantities of dishwashing detergents are handled for professional reasons, it is advisable to wear respiratory protection. A half or quarter mask is ideal for this purpose. At the same time, attention should always be paid to the maximum application concentration of the product. A certain limit value must not be exceeded. The respective limit value can be seen on the packaging of the product.

Cleaning agents should not be mixed with other acids or agents. Acid in particular should be avoided with dishwashing products. Although the powder is not flammable, a dangerous vapor can form. If this is inhaled over a long period of time, damage to the lungs and unconsciousness may result. Thermal decomposition by acid is known to release irritating vapors or gases.

Proper handling

Products for the dishwasher should always be poured into the designated compartment in the proper dosage. No other products should be added at the user's discretion. Many mixtures contain surfactants that comply with the Detergents Regulation No. 648/2004. Accordingly, they are completely aerobically degradable after the cleaning process. These products do not affect the AOX value of the water. Nevertheless, neither the powder nor a tab may be placed in a body of water without pretreatment. The ingredients are harmful to all aquatic organisms without use in a dishwasher. In a body of water, this may result in long-term harmful effects.

The uncleaned but empty packaging is disposed of by normal recycling. Instructions on the hazards and handling of the product are printed on all manufacturer's packaging. Users should adhere to these instructions. Otherwise, health problems could occur. If children live in the household, it is best to place the product high enough so that the child cannot reach the packaging.

In addition to handling powder or tabs for the dishwasher, hygiene is also very important when using the kitchen gadget. If germs have accumulated inside the dishwasher, then health problems can occur. E.coli or Pseudomonas germs can cause abdominal pain and indisposition. But also infections of the heart are not uncommon with these dangerous germs.

Many germs and bacteria are found in the rubber seal of the door. The bacteria are transmitted through the air. For this reason, a dishwasher should always be opened only after it has cooled down. Contact with the steam cloud should be avoided. The dishwasher seals should be cleaned with soap and water after each wash cycle. In addition, the appliance must be decalcified and cleaned regularly. This always ensures that no bacteria can accumulate and the dishwasher works correctly. Every now and then, the machine should be set to a higher temperature and turned on empty. This will also loosen any food residue that may have built up.
