La Tortuga coffee is defined by its unique and magical geographic location. The Galapagos Islands, a stunning Ecuadorian archipelago of volcanic islands located 906 km off the coast of mainland Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, are world-renowned. These islands are famously where Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution in 1836, thanks to the vast array of unique species he encountered, including the iconic 100-year-old giant tortoises.
In addition to its rich biodiversity—home to birds, sea lions, iguanas, dolphins, and gulls—the Galapagos is also home to the exotic coffee of La Tortuga. The Cooperativa de Cafetaleros de Galapagos, formed in 1997, consists of more than 80 producers who are dedicated to protecting the coffee industry while conserving the natural environment. The farmers in the Galapagos are deeply mindful of the island's wildlife and plant life, considering themselves temporary inhabitants and believing that the true owners of the land are the animals and native plants.
