Espíndola is a canton located in the Province of Loja, Ecuador. Even though the Equator passes through Ecuador, Espíndola is located in the Southern Hemisphere and is considered one of the poorest towns in the country. This cantón owes its name to the mighty river that crosses the region. Local history states that in 1860 this region was owned by a very powerful indigenous woman called Cacica Francisca Chigua. However, by the early 1900s, she had sold this land to some very rich families, including the Eguiguren, who enslaved all of their workers and treated them very poorly. Today, when you visit this place, you’ll enter to a magical world with charming people and beautiful surroundings.
