Exploring Ecuador: Rare and Fine Coffees from North and South

Ecuador is a small player in the world of specialty coffee, but with all the natural resources to produce outstanding coffees.  The Caravela Ecuador team has been working hard to find exceptional coffees from the northern and southern regions.  And now it is time to share this bounty with discerning coffee roasters.

Caravela Coffee North America and Joe Coffee Company will be hosting an Ecuador cupping event at the Joe Pro Shop in Manhattan on Monday, November 21 at 4PM.

We will be cupping coffees from different regions in the north and in the south, single varieties such as Sidra and Typica Mejorada, coffees from growers associations, all-star single producers and farmers that we work with that are top scorers at the annual Taza Dorada.

This is a purchasing event, so these coffees are available offers from lots that we have brought up to The Annex in Oakland, CA or are en route to Continental Terminals in Jersey City, NJ, or types because they have already been sold, but representative of what is available.  Click title above to RSVP.

Latin America's Incredible Coffee Diversity

Alejandro Cadena is one of the founders of Caravela, a pioneering high quality coffee exporter/importer. In 2002, Caravela revolutionised the coffee industry by developing a unique model of working with small and medium sized producers that would promote quality and sustainability at the farm level. By cupping every single lot delivered by growers, separating by grade and identifying the best lots from the bad and the average, the coffee industry was not only able to find better tasting coffee but also recognize and reward outstanding producers.  This practice is still in place today and is now applied by Caravela in other regions in Latin America where Caravela is present.

Alejandro is known for his innovative and creative approach to coffee quality. His passion and knowledge for coffee and its diversity amongst different origins in Latin America is masterful.

Alejandro will be in Australia in March 2016 and will be speaking exclusively at Paramount Coffee Projects in Sydney and Seven Seeds in Melbourne. He will be discussing the subject of Coffee Diversity; specifically, from 4 origins where Caravela has export operations: Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

His talk will be followed by a cupping of four samples from each of the four origins.  Alejandro will then lead the question and answer segment of the evening.
This event will be a great educational insight into coffee diversity and why it is so relevant and significant to the industry. Register today to secure your spot.

Experimental Fermentation Cupping

Have you ever wondered why your coffee tastes the way it does? A key element is fermentation. In collaboration with Finca Alcatraz and PCP we invite you to join us for the first of many “experimental fermentation” cuppings. By examining this complex process, we will explore how it affects both our senses and the longevity of coffee itself. We have worked closely with Wilfredo Ule and Finca Alcatraz for the past 10 years to dial-in on what we believe is the perfect fermentation for his farm.

We invite you to cup, compare, collaborate, and ride the rollercoaster of fermentation.

Starts - 9AM-12PM / 11th December.

Bring - Spoon

Where - PCP 80 Commonwealth St, Surry Hills NSW 2010

Space will be limited so please RSVP to: mark.howard@virmax.com

UK Nicaragua Drying Process Cupping

Caravela Coffee and Square Mile Coffee Roasters will be hosting the second round of the Nicaragua Drying Experiments on Friday, October 2 from 6pm to 9:30pm at the Square Mile Roastery in London.

This is the second part of a study that explores the effects different drying practices have on the longevity and quality of coffee.  In March, we cupped 3 different samples from Nicaragua. One coffee, dried concurrently 3 different ways: on a cement patio, on a black plastic tarp, and on raised beds with 80% shade.  All of these coffees were dried by Virmax Nicaragua at the Beneficio La Estrella drying facility.

Join us as we revisit these 3 same coffees six months later to see how time has treated them.
